Sewer

Common causes of sewer backups

Fats, Oils, or Grease

Avoid putting fats, oil or grease down the drain as they will clog a sewer line.  These items cool as they travel down and attach to the pipe walls  which can lead to sewer backups. Think of it as cholesterol blocking your arteries.

Disposable Wipes

Please do not flush wipes down the toilet (even if they are "flushable"). These will clog the sewer pipes when they build up. Toilets should not be used for household waste.

Tree roots

Plant trees away from sewer laterals and mains. Tree roots have a tendency to creep into pipe joints where they grow and spread inside the pipe.

Mainline Cleaning

It is not uncommon to experience water movement or splash from floor drains and toilets when main lines are getting cleaned. You may notify Public Works for any concerns.
